In the heart of 1888 Amsterdam, a steadfast violin craftsman, Vedder (Gijs Scholten van Aschat), finds himself at odds with the relentless march of progress. His quaint abode, nestled opposite the newly erected Central Station, is threatened by the looming shadow of the proposed Victoria Hotel, a symbol of luxury and capitalism. As the silent war between the humble artisan and the powerful businessmen escalates, Vedder's cousin, Anijs (Jacob Derwig), a pharmacist tucked away in the northern provinces of the Netherlands, grapples with his own turmoil. Entangled in a web of illicit medical practices, Anijs yearns for an escape not only for himself and his wife Martha (Rifka Lodeizen), but also for a downtrodden colony of peat cutters, to whom he's promised a brighter future in the fabled lands of the United States. Fueled by a blend of commitment and pride, or perhaps desperation, the cousins concoct a daring scheme designed to benefit everyone involved. However, as they stand against the unforgiving tide of progress and wrestle with their own moral uncertainties, their well-intentioned plan spirals into a tragic cascade of consequences.
