A Florida Enchantment (1914)

In the heart of the Sunshine State, New York socialite Lillian Travers embarks on a turbulent journey of magic, mischief, and mistaken identities. As she plans a surprise visit to her fiancé, Dr. Fred Cassadene, in St. Augustine, she stumbles upon an unexpected scene at the Ponce de Leon Hotel. The doctor, whom she intended to discuss their impending nuptials with, is caught in the midst of a passionate flirtation with a captivating widow. Stung by jealousy yet unwilling to sever ties, Lillian finds herself drawn to a mysterious curio shop. Here, she discovers an ancient box, eerily identical to one owned by her aunt. Within this relic, she uncovers a vial of four mystical seeds from the tree of Sexual Change, each with the power to transform its consumer into the opposite sex. Driven by a desire for revenge, Lillian decides to experience life through a man's eyes and swallows a seed. After a brief trance, she wakes up the next morning to a full-grown mustache and a new perspective. Now, as a man, she embarks on a hilarious journey of courting every woman she comes across, much to the chagrin of the men around her. To maintain her new persona, Lillian convinces her maid, Jane, to consume a seed, providing her with a 'proper' valet. Meanwhile, Dr. Cassadene, although baffled by his sweetheart's odd behavior, continues his amorous pursuits. Disgusted and determined to escape, Lillian – now 'Lawrence Talbot' – absconds to New York and entrusts her fortune to her new male alter-ego. Upon Talbot's return to St. Augustine, he flirts outrageously with the widow and other guests, much to the doctor's exasperation. But when Talbot's identity is questioned and his life threatened, he reveals the secret of the magical seed. Incredulous, the doctor swallows a seed in defiance, ensuing chaos and confusion as he begins to court his male acquaintances. As the doctor is chased by his bewildered friends, he jumps into the ocean to escape. In the heart-pounding climax, Lillian awakens from this wild dream, chuckling at the vial in her hand. The movie closes with Dr. Cassadene entering the room, oblivious to the fantastical adventure that unfolded in his absence. Thus, 'A Florida Enchantment' weaves a tale of love, betrayal, and magical transformations, all set against the charming backdrop of St. Augustine, where reality and dreams blend seamlessly into one enchanting narrative.
