Plot

In "1944," acclaimed director Elmo Nüganen offers a riveting depiction of the pivotal events that unfolded on the Eastern Front in Estonia. The narrative unfolds from the heart-stopping Battle of Tannenburg Line through the fierce July skirmishes on the Sinimäed Hills, and culminates in November with the Soviet Army's forceful capture of the Sorve peninsula. The film weaves together the perspectives of both warring factions - the Estonians who banded with the German Army in the 20th Estonian division Waffen-SS, and those who served in the 8th Estonian Rifle Corps of the Soviet Army. In this crucible of conflict, each Estonian is cornered into making life-altering choices, their decisions revealing the brutal paradox of war - a fight for survival that turns neighbors into adversaries. The film's protagonists, Carl Tammik and Urey Jogi, find themselves ensnared in this harsh reality. They, along with their comrades, family members, and even chance acquaintances, grapple with the harsh realities of war, their personal trials forming the heart of this gripping narrative. In "1944," choices become battlegrounds, and battlegrounds become choices, creating a cinematic journey that echoes long after the final credits roll.
