Plot

In the roaring 1920s, the heart of London is shaken by a chilling murder. The victim, Emily French, is a wealthy and irresistible widow known for her glamour. The echoes of her demise linger in the luxurious interiors of her opulent townhouse, staining its plush carpets with an unforgiving red. Leonard Vole, a young opportunist, finds himself ensnared in the iron grip of suspicion, as he was not only French's paid lover but also the primary beneficiary of her substantial estate. Emily's staunchly devoted housekeeper, Janet McIntyre, stands firm in court, her testimony painting Leonard as the ruthless predator who took Emily's life. Yet Leonard, steadfast in his claims of innocence, believes his salvation lies in the hands of his enigmatic partner, Romaine, a captivating chorus girl with an air of mystery. Enter John Mayhew, a compassionate solicitor haunted by the memory of his deceased son, who, like Leonard, faced the horrors of the trenches. Drawn to Leonard's plight, Mayhew enlists the help of the cynical and astute barrister, Sir Charles Carter, to navigate the labyrinth of the legal system. As the trial unfolds, the damning evidence against Leonard piles higher, a mountain constructed largely from Romaine's unexpected and shocking testimony for the prosecution. Just when hope seems to be fading away, a mysterious woman steps forward, carrying a revelation that threatens to shatter Romaine's credibility and expose her as a liar and a bigamist. This startling twist leads to Leonard's startling acquittal. However, when Mayhew crosses paths with Leonard years later, he is confronted with a revelation that sends shockwaves through the very core of his beliefs.
