Rocket Girls (2007)

In a whirlwind of adventure and familial intrigue, Yukari Morita embarks on a spirited journey to unravel her past by finding her estranged astronaut father, Hiroshi, who vanished on his wedding night, leaving a trail of unanswered questions. Her search leads her to the Solomon Islands and into the heart of the Solomon Space Agency (SSA), where she encounters the beleaguered base director, Nasuda Isao. Isao’s world teeters on the brink of collapse as the SSA faces imminent shutdown due to a string of unsuccessful spacecraft launches. Their only glimmer of hope lies in a smaller spacecraft, a solution thwarted by the inconvenient truth that it's simply too small for adult astronauts. In the midst of these troubles, a unique proposition emerges. Isao, in exchange for aiding Yukari in her quest to find Hiroshi, offers her a place within the agency. Thus, Yukari steps into an unexpected role, starting from the humble beginnings of a button-presser. However, this is the mere tip of the cosmic iceberg. Before long, her journey sees her joining forces with her stepsister Matsuri, a spirited adventurer, and Akane Miura, a reserved tech enthusiast. Together, they find themselves on the precipice of history, as they suit up to become Japan’s youngest ever astronauts. Intrigue, adventure, and a dash of sisterhood intertwine as Rocket Girls rockets into a thrilling exploration of space and self-discovery.
