Plastic Memories (2015)

In the not-so-distant future, we are transported to a city where the line between humans and androids blurs, thanks to SAI Corp's revolutionary creations - the Giftias. These advanced androids are lifelike, not only in their physical resemblance but also in their capacity to experience human emotions and retain memories. Giftias, however, are not without limitations - their life spans are precisely 81,920 hours, equivalent to about nine years and four months. Beyond this, they face an inevitable decline characterized by memory loss, emotional disintegration, and violent outbursts. The narrative of "Plastic Memories" spirals around Tsukasa Mizugaki, an 18-year-old who, after floundering in his college exams, lands a job at SAI Corp, thanks to his father's influence. Tsukasa is assigned to the Terminal Service, a department burdened with the melancholy duty of retrieving Giftias on the brink of their expiration. In this metaphorical graveyard, Tsukasa's role is a spotter, working alongside Giftias acting as marksmen. Adding a twist to Tsukasa's already complex task is his paired partner, Isla, a Giftia whose sole prior responsibility was serving tea to her co-workers. Together, Tsukasa and Isla navigate the emotional toll of their roles in SAI Corp's Terminal Service No. 1 office, grappling with the terminality of the Giftias' existence. "Plastic Memories" is a poignant exploration of the ephemeral nature of life and memory, wrapped in the futurist sheen of a world cohabited by humans and androids.
