Year of the Dragon (1985)

In the heart of New York City, a clandestine agreement has long held the NYPD at bay from the Chinese triad, the puppet master of Chinatown's underworld. This unspoken pact, mingling with an equally veiled agreement with the Italian mafia, maintains an uneasy peace in the neighborhood. However, this stability is shattered when the young rogues of Chinatown, the emerging troublemakers in the crime scene, brazenly kill Jackie Wong, the triad's head. In the wake of this turmoil, Captain Stanley White is reassigned from Brooklyn to Chinatown. An unyielding officer of Polish heritage, Stanley's reputation for stirring the pot precedes him, a trait that does little to mend his fractured marriage to his long-suffering wife, Connie. Although instructed to focus on the youth gangs, Stanley veers off course, setting his sights on Joey Tai, Jackie's ambitious son-in-law who has seized control of the triad. Stanley's audacious moves disrupt the NYPD's traditional hands-off approach towards the triad, attracting the ire of his superiors. Unbeknownst to them, Joey Tai, the supposed harbinger of a more vigorous leadership, might be the puppeteer behind Chinatown's escalating violence, including Jackie's murder. To dismantle Joey's organization, Stanley conscripts the unseasoned NYPD officer Herbert Kwong to infiltrate the triad, a mission that might exceed his training. Meanwhile, Stanley embarks on a tumultuous relationship with Tracy Tzu, an American-born Chinese reporter who covers Chinatown's beat, further fueling his crusade against Joey. As Stanley and Joey's clash escalates, their personal vendetta endangers those around them, turning the streets of Chinatown into a battlefield. The stakes only amplify when the war reaches the streets of Hong Kong, the jungles of Thailand, and the gambling dens of Little China, threatening Stanley's career and a quarter-billion dollars' worth of heroin. Caught in the crossfire between loyalty to their respective organizations and personal survival, Stanley and Joey's struggle raises the question: Will they survive the upheaval, or will they become casualties of the war they instigated? Will the year of the dragon see the resurrection of peace in Chinatown or its descent into anarchy?
