Plot

Caught in the turmoil of her lover's arrest for a heinous crime, nightclub crooner Vivianne Bruce is compelled to seek a new abode. She stumbles upon a dwelling run by the hard-hearted "Nellie" Alistair, a boarding house seemingly providing sanctuary for single mothers. Yet, beneath the surface lurks a sinister operation – trading newborns for profit. Vivianne finds herself sharing a room with Chris Ralston, a mother newly arrived with her infant son. Initially resentful, a bond forms between the two women when Chris steps in to defend Vivianne during a dispute with another tenant. As fate would have it, Vivianne is entrusted with the care of Chris's child, a responsibility that takes a tragic turn when the baby falls ill. When their plea for aid falls on "Nellie's" deaf ears, they face an unimaginable loss. In the wake of this tragedy, a heated altercation with "Nellie" sends Vivianne tumbling down a staircase, triggering an unexpected childbirth. The shocking revelation of the boarding house's true purpose prompts the intervention of the law, leading to "Nellie's" arrest. Haunted by her lover's execution, Vivianne entrusts her newborn daughter to Chris, seeking to fill the void left by her own child's passing. She yearns for a fresh start, free from the taint of a past marred by murder and deception. This tale of resilience and friendship in a world of exploitation and betrayal is a stark portrayal of the struggles faced by women in the twilight of society.
