Plot

Set against the vibrant backdrop of Victorian England, "Wilde" (1997) paints a compelling portrait of the celebrated Irish writer, Oscar Wilde. Renowned as a genius, poet, and playwright, Wilde's return to London from America heralds a period of personal triumph and turmoil. He marries the devoted Constance Lloyd Wilde, and they become the proud parents of two children, Cyril and Vyvyan. As his plays captivate audiences, his prosperity grows, yet beneath the surface, a different narrative unfolds. A profound self-realization emerges as Wilde forges an intimate bond with the young Robbie Ross. Indulging in clandestine affairs with youths, Wilde courageously acknowledges his homosexuality, stepping out from the societal shadows. However, his world turns tumultuous when he succumbs to an all-consuming passion for the charismatic yet manipulative Lord Alfred 'Bosie' Douglas. In the throes of his obsessive love for Bosie, Wilde finds himself embroiled in a damaging legal battle. Incensed by Wilde's relationship with his son, Bosie's father, the Marquise of Queensberry, makes a public accusation, branding Wilde a "posing sodomite." Defiant against the prejudice of an intolerant society, Wilde refuses to escape to safety and faces the wrath of the Victorian courts. The result is a harrowing two-year sentence of hard labor that ravages Wilde's health and spirit. Post-imprisonment, Wilde's life in Paris is a mere shadow of his earlier glory. Yet, even in his decline, Wilde remains the First Modern Man, his story a testimony of personal authenticity amidst societal hypocrisy. "Wilde" is a film that celebrates the triumph of individuality over societal norms, capturing the essence of a man who dared to live life on his own terms.
