Amid the foreboding beauty of Iceland's remote island, Flatey, the stage is set for the wedding of Jon, a brooding middle-aged professor, and Thora, his ex-student, effervescent with youth and excitement. She eagerly anticipates the dawn of their shared future, while he finds himself ensnared in a tangled web of past and present. The whispers of his first marriage echo around him, a spectral reminder of love lost that haunts his every step. As the island bristles with anticipation, Jon's plans to erect a golf course on its untamed landscapes hit a wall. His dreams of green fairways under the cold Icelandic skies seem to drift further away with each passing hour. His best man, meanwhile, has taken a drunken detour, lost in the island's vastness, shoeless and senseless. Compounding Jon's turmoil is Thora's mother, a tempest of disapproval and demand. She vehemently opposes the nuptial union and insists on the immediate repayment of Jon's outstanding debt before the wedding night, adding a chilling frost to the already icy relations. Under the watchful gaze of the pale midnight sun, the wedding guests begin to arrive, their joyous chatter a stark contrast to Jon's inner tumult. A sleepless night of deep contemplation and excessive libation ensues. Burdened with the weight of past regrets, unfulfilled dreams, impending debts, and the looming specter of matrimony, Jon begins to unravel. As the wedding bells prepare to chime, will Jon be able to navigate this tempestuous sea of uncertainty and make it to the chapel, or will the ghosts of his past and the trials of his present prove too formidable? Amidst the endless preparations and bitter second thoughts, one question remains: Is this the path to happiness that Jon and Thora truly desire?
