Plot

In the heart of the early 20th century, Vincere (2009) spins the tale of Ida Dalser, a woman swept up in a passionate love affair with the man who would become Italy's infamous Fascist leader, Benito Mussolini. Unemployed and obscure, Mussolini finds in Ida not just a lover, but a steadfast supporter who becomes his wife before the onset of World War I, and the mother of his first child, Benito Albino. Their paths diverge with the chaos of the war years, only for Ida to rediscover Mussolini in a hospital amidst the turmoil. Bitter revelations unfold as she encounters Rachele Guidi, another woman claiming to be Mussolini's wife, and their daughter, born when Guidi and Mussolini were cohabiting. As Mussolini ascends the political ladder, he buries the truth of his first marriage deep in the shadow of his rising power. A chilling dance of political persecution ensues, as Mussolini, through the machinations of the Fascist party, relentlessly pursues Ida and his eldest son, entrapping them both in the cold grip of asylums. Vincere is a riveting exploration of love, betrayal, and the merciless grasp of political power.
