Plot

In the midst of the Cold War, bumbling Lieutenant Humphrey Fairweather, R.N., finds himself shuffled off to the forgotten corners of the Navy after his latest catastrophic attempt at proving the superiority of his rocket invention leaves the Admiralty unconvinced. In a move to keep their guided-missile stations safe, they reassign him to the "H.M.S. Berkeley," an antiquated destroyer on the brink of retirement, and the oldest member of the obscure "Mothball Fleet." Unbeknownst to the Admiralty, the "Berkeley" has been without a commanding officer for close to two years, allowing its skeleton crew to cultivate a highly profitable, illicit trade with the nearby village under the cunning guidance of their quick-witted Irish bosun. The crew's lucrative operations are jeopardized by Fairweather's arrival, sparking a wave of trepidation among the ranks. However, Fairweather is blissfully unaware of his responsibilities as a Captain and is immediately consumed by two new ventures - creating another groundbreaking rocket and acquainting himself with the alluring French niece, Susanne, of the local publican, who also happens to be one of the ship's most valuable clients. As Fairweather navigates his dual pursuits and the crew scrambles to keep their racketeering scheme afloat, the "H.M.S. Berkeley" embarks on a chaotic voyage where invention, intrigue, and illicit activity collide, promising a hilarious and unforgettable journey that's anything but smooth sailing.
