Up Among the Stars (2018)

Once a renowned film director, Victor has been swallowed by the shadows of past glory since his wife's untimely demise. Now caught in the struggle of raising his son Ingmar, named after the legendary Ingmar Bergman, Victor is a ship without a sail, with no income or work in sight. His only refuge comes in the form of a dilapidated cinema managed by a family of empathetic friends, its stockroom brimming with forgotten celluloid gems that rarely see the light of day. Victor lives in the hazy echoes of his past, clinging to the times when his special effects expertise was sought after by American filmmakers. Yet his recent portfolio, a clumsily executed documentary and a laughable silent film about Ancient Greeks that only reminds people of the Romans, does little to reignite his former acclaim. Silent films, it seems, have lost their audience. Ingmar, unlike his father, finds joy in monster films and remains unimpressed by cinema's illustrious past. His father, meanwhile, drowns his despair in drink and throws himself into incomplete film projects, casting Ingmar as both his crew and star. As he juggles the quest for funding his would-be masterpiece, he is also caught in a web of a concerned social worker, a distant sister controlling a pending inheritance, and a debt-ridden ex-colleague now shooting commercial ads. Victor's dream project hinges on a whimsical love story, a stark contrast to the harsh reality of his own marriage, brought to life with fantastical sets and vintage special effects. The inevitable reality, however, catches up with him, forcing Victor to reveal the unvarnished truth to Ingmar. But not before they embark on one last cinematic escapade, a journey that will take them up among the stars.
