Plot

Within the bustling labyrinth of Union Depot, a grand metropolitan train station, a diverse array of travelers cross paths and lives intersect. Among these transient souls are Chick and Scrap Iron, two recently freed vagabonds, fresh from a prison stint for vagrancy. Hunger gnaws at their bellies, and desperation cloaks their spirits, pushing them towards an unexpected opportunity. A forgotten valise, abandoned by an inebriated traveler, becomes Chick's lucky charm. Within it, he discovers not only a shaving kit and a well-tailored suit, but a substantial bankroll that morphs the congenial hobo into a charismatic gentleman. After satiating his hunger, the newly groomed Chick desires companionship and turns his gaze towards the station's throng of hustlers. He becomes drawn to Ruth Collins, a down-on-her-luck showgirl marooned in the same sea of lost souls. Misinterpreting her struggle for survival as solicitation, he takes her to the station's hotel. However, he rapidly discerns her true plight, identifying her as another casualty of the Depression's ruthless grip rather than a lady of the night. Touched by her genuineness, Chick pledges to help her reach Salt Lake City, where employment beckons. Meanwhile, Scrap Iron stumbles upon his own stroke of luck, discovering a discarded wallet housing a claim check. Retrieving a violin case as a result, he uncovers a hidden treasure trove of cash. Unbeknownst to him, the money is counterfeit. As Chick lavishes Ruth with a new dress and a ticket to her future, the true counterfeiter and covert law enforcers steadily close in, threatening to unravel their precarious slice of fortune.
