Plot

In the turbulent heart of World War II Berlin, the Frankens, a family of assumed patriotic Germans, grapple with the shifting sands of loyalty and morality. The matriarch and patriarch, Dr. and Frau Franken, yearn for nothing but the safety and happiness of their kin in a time of conflict. Their son Kurt Franken, a fervent Nazi soldier, is away in battle, his faith unflinchingly pledged to the party's cause. Meanwhile, their other son, Eric Franken, contributes to the war effort through his work at a chemical institute, but beneath this façade, he harbors a dangerous secret. Eric is an integral part of an underground network that challenges the official narrative, boldly countering Nazi propaganda. Their weapons are the truth-filled leaflets they distribute in secret and the illicit radio broadcasts that echo through Berlin's clandestine corners, Eric's voice a beacon of resistance. Yet the shadow of the Gestapo, led by the ruthless Colonel Heller, relentlessly looms over them. Heller's mission to dismantle the resistance sees him not shying away from torture, his ignorance of the network's widespread roots being his Achilles heel. The plot takes a seismic shift when Kurt Franken, due to a sudden "medical" issue, returns home. Unaware of the storm brewing within his own family, Kurt is entwined with Sylvia Helmuth, a violinist and a key operative of Eric's underground network. As the two brothers grapple with their ideologies, the dark underbelly of the Third Reich is exposed, and the immorality of the swastika is laid bare. Underground (1941) is a vivid exploration of the battle between propaganda and truth, loyalty and morality, and the struggle to maintain humanity amidst the chaos of war. The story is a compelling dance of danger and defiance, illuminating the unseen faces of resistance within the heart of Nazi Germany. Join the Frankens as they navigate the treacherous waters of war, their journey offering a haunting glimpse into the realities of a world torn apart by hate and fear.
