Hall Baltimore, a writer of enchanting witch stories whose career is on the wane, finds himself in the secluded town of Swann Valley, a place where forgotten souls seek refuge. As part of a book tour promoting his latest novel, he is disappointed to find that the town lacks a bookstore, and he is left to linger in a hardware store, awaiting a fanbase that never arrives. To his surprise, the town's Sheriff Bobby LaGrange, a hopeful writer himself, presents himself as an ardent fan, extending an invitation to view a macabre spectacle – the body of a serial killer's victim with a stake driven through her heart. A local café serves Hall a slice of the town's chilling history – the literary genius Edgar Allan Poe once stayed in a hotel in the town, around which the murders of twelve children took place. This eerie revelation spurs Hall to share with his wife via Skype his intent to weave a novel from the peculiar events of Swann Valley. Under the velvety cloak of sleep, Hall finds himself walking through a moonlit park in his dreams where he encounters a spectral young girl, Virginia, known as "V". Hall is entranced by V, unsure of her ties to the town's dark past but grateful for the intriguing narrative she offers. Alongside Poe's ghostly figure, they form an otherworldly trio. Awakening, Hall resolves to collaborate with Bobby, using his dream as inspiration. However, he struggles with a writer's block as formidable as a fortress wall. He turns to sleep-inducing pills to revisit his dreams, intertwining reality with the surreal realm of his slumbers. As he delves deeper into the story, he's startled to realize that the tale's conclusion resonates more with his own life than he could have ever imagined. The boundaries between the writer and his tale blur, leading him down a path where truth and fiction collide, revealing a narrative more chilling and personal than any he's crafted before.
