Plot

In the vibrantly offbeat world of Try Seventeen, we follow the curious journey of Jones Dillon, a 17-year-old misfit (Elijah Wood) who abandons the idea of college after a mere day and seeks refuge in the whimsical charm of a vintage apartment complex. Here, he finds himself swept into the eccentric tapestry of his neighbors' lives, including a fiery photographer (Franka Potente) with a tempestuous disposition, and a self-centered aspiring actress (Mandy Moore) whose dreams shine as bright as her personality. As he navigates the intricacies of living independently, Jones, an aspiring writer, is caught between the allure of flirtatious encounters, the relentless pursuit of his alcoholic mother (Perkins), and the growing need to address the ghostly presence of an absent father through earnest letters. His vivid imagination, however, often carries him away, serving as both an escape and a distraction from the realities of his newfound adult life. Life, however, has a way of forcing reality upon us, and Jones finds himself at this crossroad when an unexpected auto accident compels him to reevaluate his priorities. As he teeters on the precipice of adulthood, Jones realizes that life's most profound lessons are often found not within the confines of a college campus, but in the everyday interactions with the people in our lives. This forces him to confront the inevitable question: what does he truly desire from life? The answer could lie in the very apartment building he calls home, a place that has become an unconventional classroom for life and love.
