True North (2006)

In the icy heart of the North Sea, aboard the Scottish trawler PD-100, a desperate skipper stands on the precipice of bankruptcy, his life's work of thirty-two years, his beloved vessel, threatened by the iron grip of the bank. In the vibrant port of Ostend, Belgium, the skipper's loyal first mate and son, Sean, is entangled in a high-stakes gamble to save his father's trawler, accepting a perilous assignment to illicitly transport a group of Chinese immigrants to Scotland. Assisted by the gritty crewman Riley, Sean stashes the human cargo in a hidden hold beneath the boatswain store. Unbeknownst to them, a Chinese teenager takes shelter in the ship's engine room, surviving off stolen food while leaving behind traces of money in the ship's galley. The trawler’s cook, a man of simple intellect grappling with his own demons, stumbles upon the stowaway and becomes her unexpected ally. To evade the prying eyes of customs, Sean takes a calculated risk, extending their time in the harsh North Sea to increase their catch, in turn subjecting the hidden immigrants to brutal, inhumane conditions. However, when the harsh reality of their situation culminates in the death of one of the immigrants, a wave of despair sweeps across the trawler, igniting a chain of tragic events that will forever change the lives of its crew.
