Plot

In the heartrending psychological drama, "Track 29," Dennis Potter masterfully transposes his 1974 TV play, "Schmoedipus," into the vibrant, yet often concealed underbelly of the United States. The title, echoing the nostalgic lyrics of "Chattanooga Choo Choo," sets the stage for a tale of torment, fantasy, and elusive reality. Linda Henry, lost in a world of dreams and despair, is entwined in a sterile marriage with her husband, the renowned surgeon, Henry Henry. Consumed by his obsession with his intricate basement model railroad, Henry remains oblivious to Linda's crushing loneliness and the cavernous void in their relationship. As he engages in an illicit affair with a nurse, Linda finds herself yearning for the son she was forced to give up at birth. The monotony of Linda's life is abruptly shattered when a charismatic British stranger, Martin, enters her world. He purports to be the very child she relinquished so many years ago. Haunting flashbacks reveal a disturbing event from Linda's past - a violent encounter at a carnival when she was just 16, with a man bearing a chilling resemblance to Martin. As Linda and Martin navigate their complex relationship, a palpable tension begins to grow. Martin's disdain for Henry heightens, and Linda becomes increasingly concerned for her husband's safety and the fate of his beloved train set. Yet, as the narrative unfolds, the line between reality and illusion begins to blur. Is Martin truly the son she abandoned, or simply a figment of her desperate imagination, a phantom birthed from her yearning for a different life? "Track 29" is a captivating exploration of memory, desire, and the fragile human psyche, where truth and fantasy intertwine on a dizzying ride that leaves you questioning the very fabric of reality.
