Too Many Winners (1947)

Under a shroud of reluctance, famed detective, Michael Shayne, finds himself drawn into the murky world of counterfeit pari-mutual race tickets. Despite the dismay of his secretary, Phyllis Hamilton, who yearns for a tranquil vacation, Shayne plunges into the underbelly of crime. The only lead he has is Mayme Martin, a mysterious informant with valuable information. However, when his trusted ally, Tim Rourke, arrives to retrieve the much-needed information, they are greeted by the chilling sight of the Inspector Rafferty at Mayme's residence, signaling her untimely demise. Unfazed by the tragedy, Shayne ventures to the race track to confront Jim Payson and Al Hardeman, the suspected kingpins of the operation. But danger lurks in unexpected corners, as Joe and Punk, two ruthless thugs, open fire on Shayne, leaving him wounded. As he recuperates, Shayne stumbles upon a link between a printer named Madden and his foreman Edwards, both of whom have a dark past intertwined with counterfeit sweepstake tickets. Just as Shayne believes he has untangled the web of deceit, he is thrown into a whirlpool of uncertainty as Madden and Edwards are found murdered. Will Shayne manage to unravel the mystery before it's too late? Only time will tell.
