Plot

In the harmonious world of a small Swedish orchestra, two violinists, Stig and Marta, find themselves entwined in a passionate melody of love and discord. Stig, a talented soloist, is initially driven by carnal desires. Yet, Marta seeks something deeper, a bond that transcends mere physical attraction. Amidst the stirring symphonies of Mozart, Beethoven, and Mendelssohn, Marta manages to evoke a profound adoration in Stig, leading to a bittersweet proposal when she reveals her pregnancy. However, Stig's elation is eclipsed by the looming threat of fatherhood, a role he perceives as a threat to his personal freedom and flourishing career. The couple's joyous harmony turns into a bitter quarrel, yet they find themselves bound by vows in a tumultuous marriage. Their initial happiness fades as Stig, trapped in his internal struggles and feelings of inadequacy, succumbs to the allure of an extramarital affair with a cold-hearted woman, herself tethered to an elderly husband. This poignant tale of human weakness and unpredictable fate is set against the mesmerizing backdrop of classical music, echoing the highs and lows of Stig and Marta's relationship. "To Joy" sings a tragic opera of love, betrayal, and regret, leaving viewers to ponder the profound cost of personal ambitions and the power of capricious destiny.
