Plot

In the tranquil prelude of World War II, amidst the idyllic landscapes of Cornwall, England, resides a pair of aging sisters, Ursula (Dame Judi Dench) and Janet (Dame Maggie Smith). Their serene existence in a quaint shoreline cottage is disrupted when, in the aftermath of a fierce storm, they discover a nearly lifeless man on the beach, visible from their verdant garden. Rushing to his aid, they nurture the stranger back to health, unveiling his Polish origins. Through a charming mix of broken German and rudimentary English lessons, they learn his name, Andrea (Daniel Brühl), and his extraordinary talent as a violinist. They uncover his odyssey leading to America, a voyage of hope for a brighter future, disrupted by the storm. The sisters find themselves drawn to the charismatic Andrea, lavishing him with affection. However, his presence unsettles the small town, arousing suspicion among the villagers, particularly when Andrea forms a bond with the enigmatic Russian woman, Olga (Natascha McElhone). This charming tale of friendship, suspicion, and music, weaves a poignant narrative against the backdrop of an impending global conflict.
