Plot

In the sultry summer of 1940, American expatriate Harry Morgan, along with his inebriated sidekick Eddie, find themselves living in the midst of political turmoil on the island of Martinique, a French colony in the Caribbean. Harry runs a humble boat-for-hire business, primarily taking tourists on sport fishing excursions. But as the dark cloud of the Second World War encroaches, Harry's attempts to maintain neutrality and stay removed from politics become increasingly challenging, especially with the Nazis' invasion of France. When a client who owes a large sum meets an untimely death by a stray bullet, Harry and Eddie find themselves in a dire financial predicament. Against their better judgement and desperate for cash, they are compelled to abandon their cherished impartiality. They accept a risky mission from the resistance, smuggling a fugitive Free French leader into the unsuspecting island. Throughout this perilous journey, Harry's life is further complicated by the fiery Marie 'Slim' Browning, a sassy club singer and a resistance sympathizer. As Harry spends his days in the club where Slim performs, a stormy relationship brews between them, adding another layer of intrigue to Harry's life. Finding themselves in a whirlwind of danger, intrigue and unexpected alliances, Harry and Eddie must navigate the treacherous political waters while trying to stay one step ahead of the local secret police. Soon, Harry realizes that leaving Martinique may be his only chance of survival, but unforeseen complications force him to take a stand in the escalating conflict, shattering his carefully maintained neutrality.
