In the heart of London, 1938, a mysterious woman named Crystal Shackleford lures two unsuspecting men, strangers to each other, into her flat. Unbeknownst to them, Crystal is a firm believer in an ancient legend revolving around Kwan Yin, a Chinese goddess of destiny and fortune, of life and death. As the clock ticks towards midnight on Chinese New Year, Crystal reveals her intention. The goddess, it is said, grants a singular wish to three strangers at the stroke of midnight.
Crystal proposes a wish for wealth, not for greed but as a means to an end. She desires to prove her integrity to her estranged husband, hoping to spark reconciliation. The two men, intrigued and seeing no harm, agree to the wish. The method of their proposed windfall is a sweepstakes ticket for an imminent horse race, held by one of the men named Johnny West. A man more often drunk than sober, Johnny is on the run, implicated in a deadly robbery. He only asks for two-thirds of the ticket's cost from the others to participate in the wish.
The third stranger is a barrister, Jerome K. Arbutny, currently managing the trust of a wealthy widow, Lady Rhea Belladon. The trio agrees that if their ticket wins, they will let the entire amount ride on the outcome of the race. As the clock chimes midnight, they learn each other’s names and little about their complicated lives.
The real test of Kwan Yin's power will be not only if the sweepstakes ticket wins but also if the actions of the three strangers bear any consequence on their lives in relation to this wish.
