Under the warm Los Angeles sun, Shirley Ann Whitfield, affectionately known as Ma'Dere, stands as the heart and soul of the Whitfield family. This bustling tribe includes six diverse children: Lisa, a San Francisco-dwelling wife and mother who shoulders the burden of her family's welfare, frequently sacrificing her own desires; Quentin Jr., a wandering jazz musician estranged from the family for four years; steadfast marine, Claude; Kelli, a self-confessed self-centered New York ad executive; the scholarly Mel; and the youngest, Michael, nicknamed Baby, who still nestles in the family home, contemplating his life's path. For years, Ma'Dere has resided in the familial abode with Joe Black, a church deacon. Ma'Dere's former husband and the children's father, Quentin Whitfield Sr., abandoned them years ago to chase his jazz dreams, leaving behind a painful void and a lonely piano gathering dust in the garage. Quentin Jr., much like his father, struggles to connect with his family and remains oblivious about Joe's presence in their home, viewing him as a hurdle to his father's potential return. To keep the family home running, Ma'Dere operates a dry cleaning enterprise, with each child having a stake in it. Despite the business's low profits, it sustains Ma'Dere's humble existence. However, upon her husband Malcolm's insistence, Lisa contemplates selling the business, a decision that requires convincing her siblings. As Christmas approaches, the Whitfield children, some with families of their own, converge on their childhood home. The unexpected arrival of the elusive Quentin adds to the holiday surprise. Each member battles their personal challenges, altering the family dynamic and casting a shadow of uncertainty on how this Christmas will unfold for the Whitfields as a whole.
