Renowned detective Hercule Poirot (Sir Peter Ustinov) finds himself embroiled in a tantalising web of mystery and murder. His adventure begins on a television talk show, where he encounters two intriguing characters: charismatic actor Bryan Martin (Lee Horsley), engrossed in crafting an action detective film, and the enchanting Jane Wilkinson (Faye Dunaway), an American movie starlet famed for her roles as the quintessential dumb blonde. Adding to the intriguing mix is the talented impressionist Carlotta Adams (Faye Dunaway), whose mimicry skills are as captivating as they are eerie.
As the night unfolds, the group attends a lavish party where Jane, amidst the glitter and glamour, discreetly requests Poirot and his loyal sidekick, Captain Arthur Hastings (Jonathan Cecil), to confer with her husband, the stern Lord Edgware (John Barron). The matter at hand: a long-awaited divorce. Upon meeting Lord Edgware, they are surprised to find that he has readily granted the divorce, much to Jane's delight. However, amidst her joy, Jane drops ominous hints about her willingness to resort to murder if the divorce had been denied.
When the dawn breaks, it brings with it a chilling turn of events: Lord Edgware is found dead. The accusations swirl, pointing towards Jane as the prime suspect, the household staff adamant that she committed the crime. However, witnesses from another high-society gathering vouch for Jane's presence with them. When the enigmatic Carlotta Adams also turns up dead, Poirot finds himself treading a treacherous path of deception and duplicity, as Inspector Japp (David Suchet) is hell-bent on pinning the murder on Jane.
