Plot

"Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her" is a compelling anthology that weaves together five distinct narratives, each capturing the poignant realities of middle-aged women navigating the complex labyrinth of their lives in Los Angeles. In "This Is Dr. Keener", we meet Elaine Keener, a dedicated physician and scientist, who is grappling with a potential turning point in her life. As she spends the day caring for her invalid mother, she seeks clarity from an unexpected source - a tarot reading. The revelations, while mostly accurate, deliver a jolt of surprise as they illuminate the crossroads issue in her life. "Fantasies About Rebecca" introduces us to Rebecca Waynon, a successful bank manager who appears to be tightly in control of her life. However, as we delve into her life, Rebecca's facade starts to crack, revealing a life filled with unanticipated pregnancy, a workaholic partner, and the keen observations of a homeless woman, Nancy. It is this uncanny outsider who seems to perceive Rebecca's life with more clarity than Rebecca herself. "Someone for Rose" paints the picture of Rose, a single mother and burgeoning children's book author, whose life revolves around raising her son, Jay, and her burgeoning career. The arrival of Albert, a dwarf, who becomes her new neighbour, threatens to disrupt her carefully structured life, igniting the sparks of romance. "Goodnight Lilly, Goodnight Christine" explores the dynamics of a lesbian relationship faced with the impending tragedy of a terminal illness. Christine, a tarot reader, tries to navigate the tumultuous waves of grief and depression as she cares for her dying partner, Lilly, revealing the complexities of their past, present, and uncertain future. Finally, "Love Waits for Kathy" revolves around Kathy Faber, a police detective living with her blind sister, Carol. As Carol navigates life with remarkable perception and an active social life, including dating, Kathy finds herself treating her sister with unnecessary caution. In doing so, she's let her own life, especially her romantic life, slip away. Amidst investigating the suicide of an old school friend, she begins to confront her own loneliness. Each narrative subtly intertwines with the others, creating a rich tapestry of diverse, yet relatable, experiences. With its compelling characters and vibrant storytelling, "Things You Can Tell Just by Looking at Her" offers a profound exploration of the human experience, illuminating the triumphs, heartbreaks, and the quiet moments in between.
