In the bustling heart of San Francisco, Brad Collins, a swift rising labor negotiator for a shipping company, and Nan Collins, a tasteful interior designer, find themselves entangled in a web of intrigue and danger immediately after their whirlwind week-long romance culminates in marriage. Their blissful union is shadowed by secrets as Brad hides a mysterious past under a false identity. Formerly known as Frank Johnson, he once pledged allegiance to the Communist Party, a past he now seeks to outrun.
However, the past is not easy to shake off. Brad's old flame, the enigmatic and renowned photographer Christine Norman, unexpectedly reappears during the couple's honeymoon. Unbeknownst to Brad, Christine, a covert Communist agent, plans to leverage their former relationship to lure him back into the Party’s clutches. Her ultimate goal? To manipulate Brad into disrupting his company's negotiations with the union, allowing the Communists to seize control of San Francisco's shipping industry.
Amid these unfolding complexities, Nan's younger brother, Don Lowry, becomes an unwitting pawn in this dangerous game. Christine, in defiance of her superior Vanning's orders, chooses to exploit Don's naivety and his newfound job as a stevedore, provided by Brad, as an additional assurance to their plan. Nan, noticing the strain on her husband and brother, commences her own investigation, inadvertently setting off a chain of events that could jeopardize their lives.
