Plot

"In a world where wealth is a voracious master, the pursuit of gold often blinds man to the transience of earthly treasures. The Usurer (1910) paints a chilling portrait of this grim reality, nestled in the heart of a ceaseless struggle for fortune. Enter the usurer, a man who gorges himself on the misfortunes of his fellow human beings, ruthlessly exploiting their debts to amass a fortune. As he luxuriates in the spoils of his merciless trade, his collectors fan out into the night, bearing grim tidings to the debt-ridden, their homes standing on the precipice of confiscation. The usurer's world is a stark contrast of opulence and despair. As he feasts in decadent banquets, his debtors grapple with the imminent loss of their meager possessions. The pleas for mercy go unheeded as the usurer's orders are executed with ruthless precision. A sick child left without a bed, a bereft widower stripped of his household effects, the atrocities committed in the name of debt repayment are as heart-wrenching as they are relentless. Nevertheless, the usurer, oblivious to their plight, continues to bask in the grandeur his ill-gotten wealth affords. But as the saying goes, 'Pride comes before a fall.' His moment of reckoning arrives in an unexpected twist of fate. One fateful evening, an exhausted widow faints against the door of his vault, inadvertently locking the usurer inside his fortress of wealth. Trapped within the iron belly of his greed, he is left at the mercy of the ticking time lock, his gold now as useless as it is abundant. As he suffocates in his vault, the usurer is confronted with the futility of his treasures. His gold, which once seemed to promise him the world, now fails to buy him a breath of air, let alone eternal happiness. The next morning, the time lock snaps open, revealing not a man of wealth, but a victim of his own greed, leveled by the unyielding hand of death. The Usurer serves as a chilling reminder that 'we have brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.'"
