Plot

In the throes of WWII England, a soldier named Barton finds an unexpected solace on a secluded farm, operated by Alice, a woman left alone while her husband languishes as a POW in Japan. A fleeting connection blossoms between them during Barton's overnight stay, sparking a daring decision – Barton resolves to desert his duties and take refuge with Alice. Their relationship deepens into an intense romance, forcing them to fabricate a ruse to the village folk for Barton's unexplained presence – he is presented as Alice's visiting sister, a role he reluctantly but gradually grows into. This tranquil sanctuary is disrupted when an army sergeant, eyeing the prospect of two available women, stumbles upon the farm. Alice's firm rejection redirects the sergeant's lascivious intent towards Barton, who now goes by "Cathy". Oblivious to the sergeant's true intentions and flattered by his attention, Barton agrees to accompany him to a Christmas dance at the army base, heedless of Alice's dire warnings. The festive celebration soon takes a sinister turn as Barton finds himself cornered by the sergeant's unwelcome advances, unable to flee from the situation. The sergeant, refusing to accept rejection, continues to press forward, leading the plot towards a chilling climax. This gripping tale of forbidden love and mistaken identity in the shadow of war serves as a haunting exploration of gender, loyalty, and the desperate measures taken in the name of survival.
