Union soldier John Dunbar is disillusioned with the American culture he was born into. After the long, bloody Civil War, he moves to the western edge of America and starts over, building a friendship with members of the local Lakota Indians. Unfortunately, nowhere in America is safe from the threat of war, and John soon must decide if he's willing to pick up arms again to defend his newfound way of life.
