Plot

In the heart of Paris, timid Eastern European émigré, Trelkovsky, finds himself ensnared in the web of an old, eerie apartment building. He's met with suspicious glances and outright hostility from its mysterious occupants, including the stern concierge and the uncompromising landlord, Mr. Zy, whose stringent rules of conduct only seem to amplify Trelkovsky's isolation. The apartment, bereft of a bathroom, holds a chilling history – its previous tenant, the enigmatic Egyptologist Simone Choule, attempted suicide within its walls. As Trelkovsky acquaints himself with the remnants of Simone's life, visiting her in the hospital and befriending her confidante, Stella, he finds himself gradually consumed by an obsession with the tragic woman. An oppressive paranoia seizes him, fueled by the hostility and peculiar behaviors of his neighbors. He becomes convinced of a sinister plot against him, a cruel scheme orchestrated by his landlord and the building's occupants. In the shadowy corners of his new home, Trelkovsky's reality blurs, and he begins to identify with Simone in unsettling ways, spiraling down a path that eerily mirrors her own. The question lingers: Is Trelkovsky the next target in a twisted plot to drive him to the same tragic end as Simone, or is he merely a victim of his own escalating fear? The line between reality and delusion blurs in this chilling tale of psychological suspense set against the backdrop of Parisian intrigue.
