Plot

In the heart of Selma, Alabama, Eve Mason, a woman of mixed race with fair skin, decides to leave her familiar surroundings to claim the legacy left by her grandfather in the distant town of Oristown. The journey to the northwest introduces her to Hugh Van Allen, a generous man who happens to be her new neighbor. Van Allen kindly assists in her move to the outskirts of the town, unknowingly setting the stage for a high-stakes drama. Meanwhile, Jefferson Driscoll, another biracial individual with light skin, harbors a deep-seated resentment toward his own race due to an old romantic wound inflicted by his mother's interference in his relationship with a white woman. Driscoll allies himself with the dubious August Barr, an Indian con-artist called Tugi, and a pair of seasoned horse thieves, Bill Stanton and Philip Clark. When Driscoll intercepts a letter revealing Van Allen's land to be on a lucrative oil field, he and his dubious companions concoct a sinister plan. Posing as a threatening organization known as "The Knights of the Black Cross," they torment Van Allen with life-threatening letters, demanding he relinquish his land. Van Allen, unperturbed, leaves for town to acquire new furniture, unwittingly leaving his land vulnerable for 48 hours. The villains, led by the ruthless Stanton, plan a midnight assault on Van Allen's property. As the clock ticks ominously, Mary Barr, deeply disturbed by the impending violence, risks everything to warn Eve. With Van Allen unaware of the looming danger, Eve races against time to gather reinforcements from town. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown as Van Allen returns, oblivious to the imminent attack.
