The Spanish Main (1945)

In a desperate bid for freedom, Laurent van Horn, a courageous leader of Dutch refugees, sets sail for the Carolinas. Their hopes are dashed when their ship crashes on the shores of Cartagene, a territory under the iron fist of the Spanish ruler, Don Juan Alvarado. Van Horn is thrown into the pits of Alvarado's prison, but like a phoenix, he rises from the ashes, escaping his captors and resurfacing five years later as a fearsome pirate king. Fate intertwines his path with Contessa Francesca, the innocent daughter of a Mexican noble, who is on a voyage to marry the unseen Alvarado. Van Horn, disguised as a navigator, commandeers her ship. Francesca, in a selfless act to protect another vessel, agrees to wed Van Horn, who then whisks her away to his pirate stronghold. This unexpected union stirs the turbulent waters of jealousy within Anne Bonney, and further enrages the already embittered Captain Benjamin Black. In a treacherous twist, they seize power from Van Horn and send the unsuspecting Francesca to meet her original betrothed, Alvarado. Meanwhile, Mario du Billar, the trusted lieutenant, strikes a dangerous bargain that could see Van Horn delivered into the hands of his enemy, Alvarado. The stage is set for a thrilling showdown on the Spanish Main.
