Plot

In the confines of nineteenth-century Yorkshire, we find the affluent orphan, Anne Lister, ensconced in the stately home of her blissfully ignorant aunt and uncle. Under their watchful eyes, they harbor aspirations of her marrying into wealth, oblivious to the fact that Anne is a lesbian. Her secret passions and adventures are meticulously recorded in a coded diary, a clandestine chronicle of her life. Her world is upended when her lover, Mariana Belcombe, succumbs to societal pressures and enters a convenience marriage with the affluent, elderly Charles Lawton. The sense of betrayal engulfs Anne, and despite Mariana's clandestine visits, she realizes their love story is at a dead-end. Amidst her heartbreak, she finds a confidante in her old flame, Tib, who aids her in redirecting her affections towards the naive Miss Browne. However, Anne soon recognizes this pursuit as futile and refocuses her energies on refurbishing her ancestral hall. A tempest brews when the inebriated Tib teeters perilously close to unveiling Anne's secret, and the scornful mine-owner Christopher Rawson, whose marriage proposal she rebuffs, hints at her sexuality becoming the subject of local gossip. Yet, Anne remains undeterred. Her life takes a hopeful turn when she meets Ann Walker. The two women form an unbreakable bond, becoming 'wives' in their own unique way. Together, they embark on a daring venture of opening a coal-mine and find happiness in their shared life. The tale concludes with a poignant note of Anne Lister's untimely demise in 1840 while on a holiday in Russia, her spirit and courage echoing through the annals of history.
