The Scarf (1951)

Emerging from the eerie confines of Alacanta, a chilling institution for the criminally insane nestled in California, is John Howard Barrington. This former lawyer's mind is shrouded in a fog of amnesia, a result of a two-year incarceration for a crime he can't remember - the murder of his beloved Rose Marie. His status as a mental patient sparing him from a death sentence, Barrington finds himself alienated from those once close, including his wealthy adoptive father, Cyrus, and his loyal friend, Dr. David Dunbar, causing his world to crumble further into confusion.
