In the midst of the tumultuous World War I, the regal Kitty Baldry (Julie Christie) presides over her society circle with a tightly focused perspective on life. This societal fortress she's built is jolted to its core when her husband, Captain Chris Baldry (Sir Alan Bates), returns from the battlefield. Scarred by war, his memory a shattered mirror reflecting a distorted past, he fails to recognize Kitty, his heart aching instead for a reunion with Margaret Grey (Glenda Jackson), a lover from a forgotten working-class past. Desperate to restore her husband's memory, Kitty turns to the renowned psychiatrist Dr. Gilbert Anderson (Sir Ian Holm). His task: to navigate the labyrinth of Chris's mind, decipher his tangled feelings for the women now populating his confused world, including his compassionate cousin Jenny (Ann-Margret). As Kitty grapples with the reality of her husband's condition, she comes face to face with a chilling truth. The man she once knew is lost, as unreachable as the bygone era he mourns. His heart is a battlefield of its own, and in the war-torn trenches of his memory, Kitty is but a phantom of a future he can't recall.
