Plot

Caught in the midst of the mundane and the life-altering revelation of her impending motherhood, Long Island housewife, Natalie Ravenna, embarks on a cathartic journey. Overwhelmed by the confines of her domestic life and fraught with uncertainty about her readiness to be a mother, Natalie flees the familiarities of her life to explore the expansive unknown of California. Her trip is punctuated by a series of candid telephone calls to her husband Vinny, providing a raw insight into her spiraling emotions. Fueled by a desperate need to escape further, Natalie picks up a young, handsome hitchhiker, Jimmy "Killer" Kilgannon. Known for his past glory as a star college football player, Killer's current reality is starkly different - he's mentally impaired due to a tragic head injury from a football game. Natalie's initial intentions of a fleeting one-night stand evolve into a complex relationship that mirrors her own internal struggle. As Natalie delves deeper into Killer's life, she's pushed to confront the unsettling question: how responsible are we for the lives that intersect ours by chance? This question is accentuated when Natalie attempts to leave Killer with his former girlfriend, Ellen Brook, only to discover Ellen's disinterest in him due to his mental state. This revelation, coupled with her encounter with a Nebraska highway patrolman named Gordon, forces Natalie to reflect on her life choices and the consequences they bear. "The Rain People" is a poignant exploration of the weight of domestic responsibility, the realization of self, and the human interconnections that shape our lives. It's a journey that pushes Natalie to the brink, compelling her to grapple with her feelings about her life, Killer, and the price she might have to pay for her newfound clarity.
