Plot

In the aftermath of the Civil War, seven impoverished ranchers from West Texas, under the leadership of John G. McElroy (Brian Keith), a distinguished ex-colonel of the Confederate army, undertake a daring quest to drive their cattle herds from their drought-stricken Texas home to the booming rail-head in Hays City, Kansas. Their journey is fraught with danger as they cross paths with the Six Nations Indian territory in the wild landscapes of Oklahoma. Unyieldingly determined, they push on to Hays City, advocating for a rail-line extension into Texas, convinced it's the lifeblood their land desperately needs. However, their pleas hit the cold wall of bureaucracy as the manager of the Kansas and Pacific Railroad, already lagging in his tracks construction to Pueblo, Colorado, shows no mercy for the Texans' plight. Undeterred, the resilient Texans ignite a war of attrition against the railroad, a move that pits them against iconic figures of the Wild West. They face Wild Bill Hickok (Robert Culp) and "Buffalo Bill" Cody (Jim McMillan), men balancing dual allegiances to the railroad and the U.S. Army, and "Calamity Jane" Canary, a woman with a vested interest in the railroad's progress due to her equipment-freighting contract. The clash of wills and wits unfolds in a vibrant tapestry of the Old West, where dreams and survival are two sides of the same buffalo nickel.
