Plot

In the sun-drenched lavishness of Orlando, Florida, we meet David Siegel, a seventy-four-year-old titan of the timeshare industry, and his forty-three-year-old wife, Jaqueline, a former beauty queen turned computer engineer. The couple, both hailing from humble beginnings, bask in the glow of their nouveau riche status, a testament to David's empire, Westgate Resorts, the largest privately owned timeshare enterprise globally. Their familial landscape is further enriched by their eight children, seven of them being biological offspring and one adopted from a relative. Their aspiration for grandeur is not satisfied by their current 26,000 square foot mansion. Instead, they embark on an ambitious journey to construct a 90,000 square foot house, a modern embodiment of the palace of Versailles, set to be the largest residential domicile in the United States. However, their opulent dream is interrupted by the devastating financial crisis of 2008, which sends shockwaves through David's business and their extravagant lifestyle. Thrust into this new economic reality, the Siegels are forced to confront the fragility of their empire. David, alongside his son Richard, who works as an executive at Westgate, grapples with the challenge of salvaging their business from the brink of ruin, while Jackie, primarily a mother, must navigate the complexities of their dwindling fortune and the impact on their family. As they attempt to keep their business afloat and their half-completed Versailles out of foreclosure, the Siegels embark on a soul-searching journey. They must redefine their values, realign their aspirations, and learn to adapt to a lifestyle far removed from the opulence they once took for granted. 'The Queen of Versailles' is an intimate exploration of the American Dream, unearthing the resilience, extravagance, and vulnerability that lie at its heart.
