Plot

Hailing from affluence, William Popper is a rebellious spirit adrift in the urban labyrinth of New York City. Viewed as an anti-social crusader by his family and peers, this college dropout grapples with a life untethered, devoid of a compass to guide him. Tragedy strikes when a fatal car accident claims the life of an elderly woman, thrusting William into an existential crisis. His desire to do right by this grim situation is at odds with his need to don a facade to appease the authorities, a performance to evade the jaws of prison. Yet, each attempt to tread the righteous path only ensnares him deeper into a web of complications. The stakes escalate when unpaid parking tickets, as trivial as they may seem, become as damning as the accident itself, landing William in the cold confines of a prison cell. A chance to escape presents itself, and he seizes it, going on the lam with his girlfriend at his side. As they navigate this precarious freedom, the question looms - How long can they outrun destiny in this high-stakes game of pursuit and survival? The Pursuit of Happiness (1971) is a poignant exploration of youth, responsibility, and the relentless chase for redemption.
