Plot

Born and raised on the wild tidal plains of South Carolina, the Wingo family finds their roots entangled in a twisted narrative of dysfunction and longing. At the forefront is Tom Wingo, the protective twin of the brilliant but tortured New York-based poet, Savannah. They, along with their late elder brother Lucas, suffered through an upbringing marked by their distant, often abusive shrimper father, Henry, and their social-climbing mother, Lila, who was more concerned with appearances than parental affection. Now middle-aged, Tom, a high school teacher and football coach, resides on the South Carolina coast, his marriage to wife Sally teetering on the edge of collapse. When Savannah's most recent suicide attempt lands her in a hospital, Tom's mother dispatches him to New York to provide family history to Savannah's therapist, Susan Loewenstein. Despite his distaste for the city, Tom grudgingly agrees, hoping to shield his mother from the blame she fears. As Tom reluctantly plunges into therapy sessions with Loewenstein, he uncovers a labyrinth of repressed family secrets. Concurrently, he discovers that Loewenstein wrestles with her own familial demons - a condescending, self-absorbed concert violinist husband and a resentful son forced to follow in his father's footsteps. As the pair navigate the murky waters of their pasts, their professional relationship blossoms into an intimate bond. In their joint exploration of Savannah's trauma, they find a shared path to confront their own life challenges, some long-buried, others startlingly fresh. In this multi-layered narrative, "The Prince of Tides" weaves a tale of tragedy, love, and the indomitable human spirit. It captures the struggle of two people working through their shared and personal traumas, using each other as beacons to find their way back to life. The film invites viewers to delve into the depths of familial relationships, unmask hidden truths, and witness the transformative power of confronting the past.
