Plot

In the dimly lit city of Reno, Nevada, seasoned detective Jerry Black (Jack Nicholson) stands on the precipice of retirement. However, his quiet farewell is shattered by the brutal murder of a young girl. Overwhelmed by a solemn pledge to the grieving mother, Jerry is pulled into a chilling mystery that the police seem all too eager to close. Convinced that they've arrested the wrong man, he embarks on a solitary quest to catch the real culprit. Jerry uncovers a haunting pattern of past incidents in the vicinity, each victim a mirror image of the other - young, petite, blonde, and unnervingly beautiful. Compelled by the urgency of his promise and the specter of the murderer, he purchases an antiquated gas station nestled in the mountain shadows near the crime scenes, transforming it into his personal lookout. His search homes in on an enigmatic figure, a tall man who navigates the night in a black station wagon, leaves behind toy porcupines, and eerily refers to himself as "the wizard", all intricate details woven into a drawing by the slain girl. As Jerry's life morphs from solitude to unexpected camaraderie with a local woman and her small blonde daughter, he is plagued by a nagging question - Has he overlooked a crucial detail that could lead to a deadly outcome? The Pledge is a riveting tale of obsession, mystery, and a relentless pursuit of justice.
