In the heartland of Idaho Falls, John H. Groberg, the eldest of seven sons from a lower-middle-class family, sets out on an extraordinary journey, leaving behind home, family and the love of his life, Jean. A steadfast member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, John is appointed as a young 'elder' and dispatched to the exotic yet remote South Sea kingdom of Tonga during the 1950's, a journey that will test his faith, resilience, and spirit. Separated by the vast Pacific, John and Jean maintain their bond through heartfelt letters, Jean's words serving as emotional anchors during John's challenging times, whilst her heart is tested by the persistent courting of John's rival, Edward. On the tiny island of Niuatoputapu, John finds an unlikely friend in Feki, an English-speaking Tongan youngster who introduces him to local customs and assists him in mastering the Polynesian language. Regardless of his linguistic accomplishments, however, John's missionary work is fraught with hardship, from the intimidating local elephantiasis bug to the relentless antagonism of the old minister of the local Biblical church. Yet, through adversity emerges triumph, and after a seemingly miraculous recovery of a local boy, John's mission gains momentum and acceptance. His journey is further complicated by a devastating hurricane, a resulting fresh water shortage that threatens his health, and the loss of his friend Feki. Yet, amidst these trials, John is elevated to district leader, a position that presents its own administrative challenges, leading to a reprimand from the regional president. Throughout his three-year odyssey, John's faith, humor, and humility serve as his compass, guiding him to form unusual friendships and discover wisdom in unexpected places.
