Plot

In the heart of sunny Southern California, Peter and Katherine Witner, an affluent couple, are living the quintessential yuppie dream. Dressed in the cloak of intelligence with high-powered jobs to match, they are the embodiment of success. Yet, beneath this facade, they are two lost souls on a carousel of hedonism and emotional immaturity, devoid of a core to anchor their lives. The New Age (1994) is a poignant depiction of adult relationships, a profound exploration into the hollowness of new ageism. The Witners' life takes a dramatic turn when they are both stripped of their jobs. Lost in their own labyrinth of existential crisis, they embark on a whirlwind of sexual escapades with multiple partners, their relationship teetering on the edge of dissolution. As they grapple with their failing finances and uncertain future, the couple takes a leap of faith, deciding to start a business together. In a desperate attempt to fill the void in their lives, they immerse themselves in the world of new age gurus and esoteric groups, hoping to find meaning amidst the chaos. However, as they continue to tread on this path, they soon find themselves at rock bottom, emotionally drained and more lost than ever. The New Age vividly captures their journey as they are forced to confront their reality, make challenging decisions, and reevaluate their lives. The question remains: will they choose to stay together, experimenting with different lifestyles, or will they part ways? This mature film serves as a mirror to the complexities of modern relationships, making viewers question the superficiality of societal norms and the true essence of life.
