Plot

As the dust of the Civil War settles, Benjie, a black veteran, makes his way back to Ironside, a southern town still steeped in prejudice and resentment. His dark skin and Union Army uniform, a symbol of defiance against the Southern cause, make him a target of animosity, stoked by the bitter ex-Confederate soldier, Colby. Amidst the hostility, Benjie finds an ally in Neal McMasters, the rancher who raised him and now offers him a shared stake in the McMasters' estate. As Benjie navigates his newfound life, he crosses paths with a group of famished Indians. His act of kindness earns him their respect and an Indian woman's hand in marriage, further enriching the fabric of his unconventional family. With the aid of his Indian brethren, he embarks on the demanding task of rounding up the ranch. However, the simmering hatred of Colby ignites a wave of violence. This unleashes an extraordinary triad of racial tension, painting an intricate tableau of white, black, and red, bound together by the shared chains of prejudice. The McMasters (1970) is a poignant exploration of racial animosity and the power of unity in a post-war era.
