Plot

In the heart of a bustling British town, Jim Fuller, formerly known as Jim Fontaine, attempts to rebuild his life after being paroled. His haunting past shadows him: a prison sentence served for the intended molestation of nine-year-old Patricia Elmsworth, a crime he averted from becoming physical harm. Jim's surrender to justice, his acceptance of his sickness, and his desire for mental rehabilitation became his only defense in court. His freedom is a testament to the prison psychiatrist, Dr. Edmund McNally's faith in his recovery. McNally, who has transitioned back to private practice, navigates the tricky path of both a parole officer and a confidante for Jim. Aided by McNally, Jim lands a job in his familiar accounting field at Clive Enterprises, a fact known only to the company owner, Andrew Clive, and his secretary, Ruth Leighton. Ruth knows of his prison sentence but is oblivious to the reason behind it. As Jim grapples with the challenges of reintegrating into society, he finds himself constantly questioning his motivations, using McNally as his moral compass. He's aware of the roots of his disturbing tendencies, which have also prevented him from forming any meaningful relationships with women. He cautiously ventures into a romantic liaison with Ruth, who prefers ignorance over knowledge about his past as they begin dating. However, their budding relationship faces a stern test when Jim encounters Ruth's adolescent daughter, Janie, triggering his past demons. His newly formed life takes another sharp turn when a child in his town is molested and beaten, dragging Jim back into a whirl of suspicion. Though he has an alibi, a hawk-eyed reporter who covered his initial trial recognizes him and starts trailing him. The reporter's relentless pursuit threatens to unravel Jim's painstakingly constructed new life, underlining the undeniable struggle of a man battling to overcome his past, while the society around him refuses to forget.
