Plot

After enduring a year in New York City, street-smart Susan Applegate is ready to trade her life of fighting off unwanted advances for a peaceful existence in her hometown of Stevenson, Iowa. Even though her heart doesn't resonate with affection for Will Duffy, a suitor with a standing marriage proposal, the prospect of returning home is too compelling to resist. However, a financial constraint stands in her way — she can't afford the full train fare back home. Inspired by a group of children at the station, Susan concocts a daring plan. She transforms herself into a seemingly innocent twelve-year-old "Su-Su" Applegate, aiming to trick the train conductors with her youthful appearance and travel on a child's half fare. Her journey, however, takes an unexpected turn when she crosses paths with Major Philip Kirby, a military instructor at the prestigious Wallace Military Institute in High Creek, Indiana. When an unexpected blockage on the rail line forces Susan to halt her journey in High Creek, she finds herself embroiled in a more elaborate charade than she initially bargained for. As Su-Su, she captures the hearts of the smitten teenage cadets at the institute, despite the best efforts of the other girls in town to outshine her. Meanwhile, she takes refuge with the family of Philip's fiancée, Pamela Hill, the daughter of the school's stern headmaster, Colonel Oliver Hill. The situation becomes incredibly complex when Susan finds herself falling for Philip, who is yearning to return to active service, anticipating the U.S. joining the war. His dreams, however, are being quietly sabotaged by Pamela, who envisions a tranquil married life far removed from the battlefield. Stuck in a whirlwind of adolescent adoration, unrequited love, and a deceptive identity, Susan must navigate her way out of High Creek without revealing her true age or intentions, all while wrestling with her growing affection for Major Philip Kirby.
