The Locusts (1997)

In the heartland of 1950s Kansas, an enigmatic drifter named Clay Hewitt dramatically infiltrates the monotony of a sleepy town. His arrival wreaks havoc, marked by a barroom brawl with local troublemaker Joel Carter, and the subsequent whisking away of the town's beauty, Kitty. Clay's quest for a job to fund his journey to California leads him to the doorstep of the town's infamous widow, Delilah Ashford Potts, a promiscuous and alcohol-addled woman with a penchant for younger men. Delilah, the owner of the local feed ranch, eagerly hires Clay, offering him not just employment in her slaughterhouse but also a place to stay in the barn of her sprawling estate. However, her intentions with Clay extend beyond mere room and board. Clay soon encounters Delilah's profoundly withdrawn son, Joseph "Flyboy" Potts, a young man enveloped in silence following a lengthy eight-year stint in a mental institution. Flyboy's only companion in this isolating world is his pet bull, Jim, a remnant of his father's legacy. As Clay immerses himself in this tangled web of characters, he finds himself drawn to the silent Flyboy. Patiently, he begins to coax Flyboy out of his impenetrable shell, fostering a bond that not only changes Flyboy's demeanor but also alters the course of their lives. Simultaneously, Clay's burgeoning romance with Kitty adds another layer of complexity to the tale. As Clay plans his departure from the town, he entrusts Kitty with a haunting secret. This revelation, coupled with Flyboy's transformation, triggers a cascade of shocking events and hidden truths, culminating in a series of revelations from the enigmatic Mrs. Potts.
