Plot

As the curtain of Prohibition falls, Bugs Ahearn, a shrewd beer baron, foresees the demise of his bootlegging empire. With his loyal accomplice, Al Daniels, he trades the gritty streets of Chicago for the sun-kissed palms of California, carrying his ill-gotten fortune and grand aspirations of breaking into high society. Bugs, a man of humble beginnings, now finds himself in the epicenter of opulence as he rents a sprawling mansion from Ruth Wayburn, a real estate agent grappling with her family's financial downfall. Unbeknownst to Bugs, the mansion was once a symbol of Ruth's family's prosperity before a disastrous business venture reduced them to penury. Seizing an opportunity, Bugs hires Ruth as his social secretary, hoping her knowledge of the upper crust will provide him a golden ticket into the world of California's elite. His ambitious eyes soon land on the stunning socialite, Polly Cass, whose beauty is only outmatched by her love for money. However, the road to respectability is fraught with challenges. Bugs finds himself entangled in a web of deceit when Polly's father, a notorious con artist responsible for the Wayburns' downfall, dupes him into investing in his failing company. With his fortune now hanging by a thread, Bugs summons his old Chicago cohorts, hoping their underworld expertise can salvage his dreams of societal acceptance. The Little Giant (1933) is a captivating tale of ambition, deception, and the unrelenting pursuit of status, where the line between high society and the underworld becomes dangerously blurred.
